What is Marble anyway?

Marble has always been a stone that is admired and sculpted by artists to show off amazing figures. Naturally, using it in your home or business allows it t be just as admired and sculpted.

Marble’s porous properties make it some of the easiest out of natural stone to sculpt. Even with its great popularity not many people know about it and its upkeep.

Our artisans come from all places. Here our very own Maria Muneton (VP of Treasury) uses her hidden talent of calligraphy to monogram a marble tile for a client.

  1. What is marble?

Marble is a metamorphic limestone, most often created in caves under the surface of the earth. Historically many infamous buildings were built using marble such as those found in Greece and Italy. However, this precious stone is found all over the world including the US, India, and Russia. Marble’s uniquely smooth and vein-y characteristics make it one of the most imitated stones on the market. Many man-made products such as quartz, corian and porcelain are created to look like marble.

  2. Marble’s Variety:

While not as versitle as other natural stone, marble holds its own with the variety of light colors it holds. Marble comes in most commonly white colors but is known to have tones of pink, gray, blue and green. Marble also comes in the purest of whites, making it popular in 21st century home design.

  3. Up Keep:

Marble because of its natural properties gives it more upkeep. In addition to sealing your countertops, you should also keep it away from heat. Many home and business owners will use a trivet to place hot object on. Additionally, never use knives directly on your countertop as marble is prone to scratching. Lastly, marble may change color over time if exposed to sunlight for long periods of time.

All in all marble requires not only more upkeep but planning before installation. Ensuring the space you are placing the stone has less daily use will ensure it keeps its vibrancy. Don’t forget that sealing your granite countertops keeps it from changing colors, scratching and staining. At Emerald Pearl sealing countertops after installation is a complimentary gift for allowing us to provide you our services. Visit our FAQs page for more information on up keep.
